    Let \(T_ 1\) and \(T_ 2\) be contractions on Hilbert spaces \(E_ 1\) and \(E_ 2\) respectively and let \(X\in L(E_ 1,E_ 2)\) be an operator that intertwines them, i.e., \(XT_ 1=T_ 2X\). Suppose that \(W_ i\in L(R_ i)\) is the minimal isometric dilation of \(T_ i\) and that \(P_ i\) is the orthogonal projection of \(R_ i\) onto \(E_ i\), \(i=1,2\). Denote by L(X) the set of all Nagy-Foias liftings \(Y\in L(R_ 1,R_ 2)\) of X, i.e., \(P_ 2Y=XP_ 1\), \(\| Y\| =\| X\|\) and \(YW_ 1=W_ 2Y\). A description of the set L(X) was given by \textit{Gr. Arsene}, \textit{Z. Ceausescu} and \textit{C. Foias} [Lect. Notes Math. 747, 24-45 (1979; Zbl 0454.47004); J. Operator Theory 4, 55-91 (1980; Zbl 0454.47005)] and \textit{Z. Ceausescu} and \textit{C. Foias} [Acta Sci. Math. 40, 9-32 (1978; Zbl 0397.47004)]. The purpose of this paper is to show that their description of L(X) can be derived by combining the method of generalized Toeplitz kernels [\textit{R. Arocena}, Integral Equations Oper. Theory 6, 759-778 (1983; Zbl 0528.47013)] with some ideas of \textit{D. Z. Arov} and \textit{L. Z. Grossman} [Soviet Math. Dokl. 27, 518-522 (1983; Zbl 0543.47010)] concerning contractive analytic functions.
