In the first part of the paper the author gives another proof of the following theorem, established by \textit{D. Freedman} and \textit{E. Passow} [J. Approximation Theory 39, 89-92 (1983; Zbl 0534.41005)]. Let f be a piecewise linear function having (possible) changes of slope only at the points i/m, \(i=1,2,...m-1\). Then, for all \(n\geq 1\), \(B_{mn+1}f\in P_{mn}\) and \(B_{mn+1}f(x)\equiv B_{mn}f(x)\). Here \(B_ nf\) is the Bernstein polynomial and \(P_ n\) the set of polynomials of degree \(\leq n\). The second part deals with the converse. It is almost achieved, but additional properties on f are needed: Either f may be twice differentiable or convex (concave respect.).
