    By writing the Fourier inversion formula on the Euclidean space \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) in polar coordinates, we obtain \(f(x)=\int^{\infty}_{0}f_{\lambda}(x)dx\) with \(\Delta f_{\lambda}=-\lambda^ 2f_{\lambda}\), which is the spectral theory of the Laplacian. The author investigates relations between properties of f and \(f_{\lambda}\) for the spaces: \(L^ 2\), \({\mathcal S}\), \({\mathcal S}'\), \({\mathcal D}\). One of the results is a ``Plancherel formula'' characterizing \(f\in L^ 2\) by the condition \[ \sup_{z,t}\int^{\infty}_{0}\frac{1}{t}\int_{B_ t(z)}| f_{\lambda}(x)|^ 2dxd\lambda <\infty, \] where \(B_ t(z)\) denotes the ball of radius t about an arbitrary point z and \[ \| f\|^ 2_ 2=\pi \lim_{t\to \infty}\int^{\infty}_{0}\frac{1}{t}\int_{B_ t(z)}| f_{\lambda}(x)|^ 2dxd\lambda. \] He also obtains a characterization for \(f\in {\mathcal S}\) and \(f\in {\mathcal S}'\). In odd dimension n, a characterization of \(f\in {\mathcal D}\), supported in \(B_ R(z)\), is a ``Paley-Wiener Theorem'' involving analytic continuation to \(\lambda\) complex and growth estimates of the form \[ | f_{\lambda}(x)| \leq c_ N| \lambda |^{n-1}(1+| \lambda |)^{-N}e^{(R+| x-z|)| Im \lambda |} \] for some \(N\). Analogous results are obtained for harmonic analysis on hyperbolic space, semi-Riemannian manifolds of constant curvature, the Heisenberg group, and for differential forms on hyperbolic space.
