This paper explores several properties of a model of \textit{A. Shimizu} [see Stochastic methods in biology, Proc. Workshop, Nagoya/Jap. 1985, Lect. Notes Biomath. 70, 100-114 (1987; Zbl 0644.92010)] for the evolution of a population of chromosomes using a diffusion approach. The model includes mutation and gene conversion within a multigene family on the chromosomes. In particular, the author shows why Ewens sampling formula emerges in this context. The theory is also extended to obtain transient and stationary results for the sampling distribution. Expectations, variances and covariances for the numbers of alleles across the chromosomes are calculated. Some numerical examples are included.
