The starting point of the paper under review is the short note of \textit{I. N. Bernstejn}, \textit{I. M. Gel'fand} and \textit{S. I. Gel'fand} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 12, 212-214 (1979); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 12, No.3, 66-67 (1978; Zbl 0402.14005)] in which a canonical equivalence between the derived categories of graded modules over a symmetric and an exterior algebra is established. Here the authors describe a naturally more general framework for this canonical equivalence by considering differential graded algebras satisfying certain natural conditions (which are called mixed algebras). For every mixed algebra A one defines the so- called Koszul dual \(A'\) of A, which is another mixed algebra (whose cohomology is the Ext's of A with simple coefficients). Then one proves that the derived categories D(A) and \(D(A')\) of differential graded modules are canonically equivalent. If A is the symmetric algebra then \(A'\) is just the exterior algebra, and thus one recovers the Bernstein- Gelfand-Gelfand theory. Examples of mixed algebras come naturally from the geometry of mixed sheaves.
