Let D be a bounded domain in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\), \(n\geq 2\), and E a closed subset of the boundary bD. Assume that bD\(\setminus E\) is a connected real hypersurface of class \(C^ 1\) in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus E\). The set E is said to be removable (with respect to D) if every continuous CR- function on bD\(\setminus E\) extends to a function of \(C^ 0(\bar D\setminus E)\cap {\mathcal O}(D).\) The main result of the present paper says that E is removable if there is a family \({\mathcal H}\) of holomorphic polynomial maps h: \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\to {\mathbb{C}}^{n-1}\) such that: (i) \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus E=\cup \{{\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus h^{-1}(h(E)):\) \(h\in {\mathcal H}\}\) (rational (n- 1)-convexity of E); (ii) all the open sets \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\setminus h^{- 1}(h(E))\), \(h\in {\mathcal H}\), are connected (strongly co-connectedness of E). The proof is based on integral representations involving the Martinelli- Bochner kernel and certain \({\bar \partial}\)-primitives of this kernel constructed by \textit{T. Hatziafratis} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 314, 781-802 (1989; Zbl 0682.32002)]. Several other results for removability are also given. Some of them generalize results previously obtained by the author and \textit{E. Stout} [Proc. Special Year in Several Complex Variables, Mittag-Leffler Inst. (1987/88) (to appear)] and by \textit{B. Jöricke} [Ark. Math. 26, No.1, 117-143 (1988; Zbl 0653.32013)].
