The paper highlights the importance of the Poincaré group \(P_{10}\) in formulating a gauge theory of gravitation. The gauging of the translation group of \(P_{10}\) leads to natural deduction of the metric structure, metric compatibility etc.; the local holonomy group is shown to be the component of the Lorentz group connected to the identity. The theory reduces to general relativity when the momentum energy complex is symmetric and all matter fields are spin-free.
