Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded open set in \({\mathbb{R}}^ N\) and let \(Q_ T\) be the cylinder \(\Omega\) \(\times (0,T)\) with some given \(T>0\). We consider the following parabolic initial boundary value problem (P) \[ \partial u(x,t)/\partial t+Au(x,t)+g(x,t,u(x,t))=f(x,t)\quad in\quad Q_ T, \] \[ u(x,t)=0\quad in\quad \partial \Omega \times (0,T),\quad u(x,0)=\psi (x)\quad in\quad \Omega, \] where A is an elliptic second order operator of the divergence form \[ (1)\quad Au(x,t)=\sum_{| \alpha | \leq 1}(-1)^{| \alpha |}D^{\alpha}A_{\alpha}(x,t,u(x,t),Du(x,t)) \] for each \(t\in [0,T]\) with the coefficients \(A_{\alpha}\) satisfying the classical Leray-Lions conditions, and g is the strongly nonlinear part satisfying essentially only the condition g(x,t,s)s\(\geq -\lambda (x,t)\) for all \((x,t)\in Q_ T\), \(s\in {\mathbb{R}}\), where \(\lambda\) is some given function in \(L^ 1(Q_ T).\) In this note we show that the problem (P) has a weak solution. This result is analogous to the elliptic case. The case where A is a higher order operator seems more complicated. Some results into this direction were obtained by H. Brezis and F. E. Browder, but stronger hypothesis on g was then needed.
