Spectral and structural properties of some pentadiagonal symmetric matrices (Q911224)

Pentadiagonal symmetric matrices arising by discretization of ordinary and partial differential equations are analyzed from spectral and structural point of view. Various types of these matrices are examined using bordering and modification techniques. The results achieved allow to compute eigenvalue-eigenvector decompositions of these matrices. Their usefulness can be seen in an easy calculation of the determinant and inverse of the five-diagonal matrices.
