Noether's problem for \(A_ 5\) (Q911655)

An affirmative answer to Noether's problem for the alternating group \(A_ 5\) is given. The author proves that the invariant field \(k(x_ 1,...,x_ 5)^{A_ 5}\) is purely transcendental over k, where k is a prime field of arbitrary characteristic. Moreover, generators of the invariant field \(k(x_ 1,...,x_ 5)^{A_ 5}\) are explicitly constructed. Two proofs of the result are given, when k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Analyzing the second one, which consists in showing the local triviality of a principal bundle in the Zariski topology, the explicit forms of five generators with coefficients in a prime field are obtained.
