Let \(\Gamma\) be a general irreducible plane nodal curve of degree \( d\) possessing exactly \(\delta\) nodes. Let C be the normalization of \(\Gamma\). It is proved that C is (d-2)-gonal if \(\delta <(d^ 2- 7d+18)/2\). For larger \(\delta\) the gonality is smaller.
