\textit{G. Mustafin} [cf. Math. USSR, Izv. 27, 251-278 (1986); translation from Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 49, No.5, 948-978 (1985; Zbl 0633.14012)] proved a geometric analogue of the Mumford-Tate conjecture for families of abelian varieties. In the paper under review the author lifts some of the restrictions on the generic fibre imposed by Mustafin for the validity of this result. The main notion used in the paper under review is that of stably non-degenerate abelian varieties, i.e. abelian varieties X whose Hodge algebra \(\oplus^{\dim (X)}_{i=0}H^{2i}(X,{\mathbb{Q}})\cap H_{i,i}(X) \) is generated by divisor classes.
