The author gives a complete picture of the Martin compactification of \(R^ n\) relative to positive solutions of a Schrödinger equation \(L_ au\equiv (-\Delta +V_ a)u=0\) in \(R^ n\) with potential \(V_ a\) such that \(V_ a(x)=a^ 2\) for \(x_ n>0\) and \(V_ a(x)=a^ 2+b^ 2\) for \(x_ n\leq 0\), where \(a\geq 0\) and \(b>0\). In particular, the topology near non-minimal boundary points is described by a family of curves in surfaces like \[ [| x'|^ 2+(a/b)x_ n]^ 2=-Ax_ n\log | x_ n| /B, \] where A and B are positive constants. He shows that the Martin boundary for \((L_ a,R^ n)\) is homeomorphic to \(\Sigma_ a\equiv \sigma_ a\cup \{(\omega ',-b\theta)\in R^ n\); \(| \omega '| =a\), \(0<\theta <1\}\) with minimal boundary points corresponding to \[ \sigma_ a=\{\omega \in R^ n;\quad | \omega | =a,\quad \omega_ n\geq 0\}\cup \{\omega \in R^ n;\quad | \omega | =(a^ 2+b^ 2)^{1/2},\quad \omega_ n\leq -b\}, \] determines neighborhoods of each points of \(\Sigma_ a\) in the Martin compactification of \(R^ n\), constructs the Martin kernel, and gives the asymptotics at infinity of the Green function for the Schrödinger equation. The results of this paper give a complete answer to a delicate problem left open by the author [Lect. Notes Math. 1285, 342-347 (1987; Zbl 0639.35020)].
