    The author considers the Cauchy problem for the quasilinear hyperbolic- parabolic coupled system of second order: (1) \(\partial^ 2_ t\vec u-\partial_ iA^ i(t,x,\theta +T_ 0,\nabla \vec u)=\vec f(t,x,\theta +T_ 0,\vec u,\nabla \vec u,\partial_ t\vec u);\) (2) \((\theta +T_ 0)\partial_ tN(t,x,\theta +T_ 0,\vec u)- \partial_ iQ^ i(t,x,\nabla \theta,\nabla \vec u)=g(t,x,\theta +T_ 0,\nabla \theta,\vec u,\nabla \vec u,\partial_ t\vec u);\) (3) \(\vec u(0,x)=\vec u_ 0(x)\), \(\partial \vec u(0,x)=\vec u_ 1(x)\), \(\theta (0,x)=\theta_ 0(x),\) where \(x\in R^ m\) and \(t\in [0,T]\), \(\vec v=^ t(v_ 1,...,v_ n)\), \(\vec u\) and \(\theta\) are unknown functions; \(T_ 0\) is a positive constant. The main result is the following: Let \(s\geq [m/2]+1\) be an integer. Assume some smoothness and ellipticity on the coefficients of the systems (1), (2). If the initial data \(\vec u_ 0\), \(\vec u_ 1\), \(\theta_ 0\) satisfy the conditions \(\vec u_ 0\in H^{s+2}\), \(\vec u_ 1\in H^{s+2}\), \(\theta_ 0\in H^{s+2}\); \(\| u_ 0\|_{L^{\infty}}\), \(\| \nabla \vec u_ 0\|_{L^{\infty}}\), \(\| \vec u_ 1\|_{L^{\infty}}\), \(\| \nabla \theta_ 0\|_{L^{\infty}}<L\), \(\| \theta_ 0\|_{L^{\infty}}<\min \{T_ 0,L\}\), where L is some positive constant. Then there is a \(T>0\) such that the Cauchy problem (1), (2) and (3) admits a unique pair of solutions \[ \vec u\in C(I;H^{s+2})\cap C^ 1(I;H^{s+2})\cap C^ 2(I;H^{s+1});\quad \theta \in L^ 2(I;H^{s+2})\cap C(I;H^{s+2})\cap C^ 1(I;H^ s), \] where \(I=[0,T].\) The author proves this theorem by successive approximation in which the solution of some related linear problem is applied to it. Here, the existence of a solution of this linear problem and convergence of the successive approximation are proved by using Sobolev embedding theorem, Gårding's inequality, some energy inequality and Shibata theorem.
