For a space X, let \(\Omega^ n_ 0X\) denote the base-point component of \(\Omega^ nX\). This paper is about \(H_*(\Omega^ n_ 0X)\) when n exceeds the connectivity of X. For the case \(X=\Omega^{\infty}S^{\infty}\), the mod 2 homology is computed here for \(n=1\) and \(n=2\). For \(n=1\) the cohomology is a primitively generated polynomial algebra. For certain larger n it is shown that the Whitehead square \(\omega_ m\in \pi_{2m-1}(S^ m)\) has a nontrivial Hurewicz image in \(H_*(\Omega^ n_ 0S^ m)\). Let JU(q) denote the fibre of \(\psi^ q-1: BU\to BU\) and JSO(3) the fibre of \(\psi^ 3-1: BSO\to BSO\). The authors compute the mod p homology of \(\Omega^ nJU(q)\) and the mod 2 homology of \(\Omega^ nJSO(3)\) for all n. For the former the answer depends on the parity of n; it is an algebra with at most one generator in each dimension. For the latter the answer depends on the congruence class of n mod 8, and for six of the eight cases it is expressed in terms of the homology of the spaces that figure in the real form of the Bott Periodicity Theorem. The method of proof in most cases is a careful study of the relevant Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence.
