The authors introduce directoids as ordered groupoids A such that a,b\(\leq a\cdot b\) for any \(a,b\in A\) and \(a\cdot b=b\cdot a=b\) if \(a\leq b\). The underlying order of a directoid is up-directed. Directoids form a variety of groupoids. The paper describes free directoids, solves their word problem and investigates the lattice of subvarieties of the variety of directoids.
