The continuous wavelet transform \[ L_{\psi}:\;f\mapsto L_{\psi}f(\omega,t) := \frac{1}{\sqrt{| \omega |}}\int_{{\mathbb{R}}}{\bar \psi}(\frac{\tau -t}{o})f(\tau)d\tau,\quad \omega \neq 0, \] with \(\int_{{\mathbb{R}}}| {\hat \psi}(\xi)|^ 2| \xi |^{-1}d\xi =1\) is extended to a linear isometry between the Sobolev space \(H^ s({\mathbb{R}})\), \(s\in {\mathbb{R}}\), and the Sobolev space \(H^{0,s}({\mathbb{R}}^ 2,(d\omega dt/\omega^ 2))\) with two variables. Further it is shown that for small scaling parameters \(| \omega |\) the asymptotic behaviour of \(L_{\psi}f(\omega,\cdot)\), \(f\in H^ s({\mathbb{R}})\), is characterized by a generalized derivative of f as far as the wavelet \(\psi\) possesses a special structure. In particular compactly supported wavelets have this structure. The consequences for the discrete wavelet transform are discussed in great detail and pointed out by Mallat's iterative algorithm. Numerical examples illustrate the theoretical results.
