The method of upper-lower solutions and the associated existence- comparison theorem for continuous reaction-diffusion equations are extended to a finite-difference system which is a discrete version of the continuous problem of either parabolic or elliptic type under appropriate boundary conditions. It is shown that for a class of initial functions the corresponding time-dependent solutions converge monotonically to a steady-state solution. This monotone convergence leads to the stability property of the steady-state solution as well as an estimate of the stability region in the framework of the finite difference system. Numerical results are given for an enzyme-substrate reaction model.
