Let \(\pi\) be an arbitrary product of copies of \(R_ R\). Then R is called right \(\pi\)-coherent if every finitely generated submodule of \(\pi\) is finitely presented. In this paper a new characterization of \(\pi\)- coherence is obtained. It is shown that R is right \(\pi\)-coherent if and only if for each \(n\geq 1\), right annihilators of subsets of \(R_ n\) are finitely generated if and only if R is a left \({}^*\)-ring. A ring is called a left \({}^*\)-ring if the dual functor \(Hom_ R(\)-,\({}_ RR)\) takes finitely generated left R-modules to finitely generated right R- modules. In addition, \(\pi\)-coherence is considered for polynomial rings. Using Goldie's Theorem, it is shown that if R is a semiprime two-sided noetherian ring then R[S] is right \(\pi\)-coherent for any set of variables S. The same result is also obtained for two-sided noetherian rings, not assumed to be semiprime, provided R contains an uncountable field.
