The authors derive a branching law for the decomposition of irreducible finite-dimensional Spin(7,\({\mathbb{C}})\)-modules over \(G_ 2:\) If \(G=Spin(7,{\mathbb{C}})\) and \(H=G_ 2\), then the starting point is an embedding \(H\to SO(7,{\mathbb{C}})\to G\), followed by an equality G/P\(\cong H/Q\) (as homogeneous spaces), where P is the stabilizer of an isotropic line in \({\mathbb{C}}^ 7\) and \(Q=P\cap H\). The basic idea is now to use the above equality to reduce the branching law for \(G\to H\) to that for \(\ell \to m\), where \(\ell \subseteq Lie P\) and \(m\subseteq Lie Q\) are certain Levy factors. The applications concern representations of \(A=U(so(8))/J\), where J is the Joseph ideal.
