Let \(P_ 1\), \(P_ 2\) be proper subgroups of a group G such that no nontrivial normal subgroup of \(P_ 1\cap P_ 2\) is normal in both \(P_ 1\) and \(P_ 2\). The group G is said to be a rank 2 amalgam of \(P_ 1\) and \(P_ 2\) if it is the amalgamated product of \(P_ 1\) and \(P_ 2\), with amalgamation of \(P_ 1\cap P_ 2\) (hence, G is necessarily infinite). Amalgams of rank 2 are closely connected to (parabolic systems defining) simply connected chamber systems of rank 2. If \(N\trianglelefteq G\) is such that \(P_ 1\cap N=P_ 2\cap N=1\), then G/N is said to be a completion of the amalgam \((G,P_ 1,P_ 2)\). Amalgams satisfying the following additional properties are often considered in the literature: 1) both \(P_ 1\) and \(P_ 2\) are finite; 2) there is a prime p such that: 2.a) \(Syl_ p(P_ 1\cap P_ 2)\leq Syl_ p(P_ i)\) \((i=1,2);\) 2.b) \(C_{P_ i}(O_ p(P_ i))\leq O_ p(P_ i)\) \((i=1,2).\) A problem often studied for amalgams of this kind is the following one: assume we know the structure of \(P_ i/O_ p(P_ i)\) \((i=1,2)\). Can we reconstruct \(P_ 1\) and \(P_ 2\) from that, or, at least, \(O_ p(P_ 1)\) and \(O_ p(P_ 2)?\) The author solves this problem in the case of \(p=2\) with \(P_ 1/O_ 2(P_ 1)\cong A_ 7\) and \(P_ 2/O_ 2(P_ 2)\cong A_ 3\). He proves that, in this case, one of the following must occur: i) \(O_ 2(P_ 1)=2^ 6\) and \(O_ 2(P_ 2)=2^{1+1+1+2+2+1};\) ii) \(O_ 2(P_ 1)=2^ 4\) and \(O_ 2(P_ 2)=2^{1+2+2+1};\) iii) \(O_ 2(P_ 1)=2^{1+6}\) and \(O_ 2(P_ 2)=2^{2+2+2+1+1+1}.\) In case (i), \(O_ 7(3)\) occurs as a completion. We obtain McL as a completion in case (ii). No `nice' finite completion is known in case (iii).
