In this paper, the removability of holomorphic mappings from plane domains to Riemann surfaces are considered. The classical results of the removability is Picard's theorem, which asserts the removability of holomorphic mappings of the punctured disk to the thrice punctured sphere. \textit{M. Ohtsuka} [Nagoya Math. J. 4, 103-108 (1952; Zbl 0046.308)] extended this theorem to the case of holomorphic mappings to to the punctured disk to Riemann surfaces. First, the author gives an elementary proof of Ohtsuka's result by using Fuchsian groups. Next, the author defines a class of Riemann surfaces which is called a class of C-nondegenerate Riemann surfaces, by using the Carathéodory metric and shows the following theorem. Theorem. Let E be an AB-removable compact subset of the unit disk D and \(R_ 1\) be a Riemann surface which is C-nondegenerate. Consider a covering Riemann surface \(R_ 2\) over \(R_ 1\) with the projection \(\pi\) : \(R_ 1\to R_ 2\) and suppose that for every point p in \(R_ 2\) there exists a neighborhood V of p such that every components of \(\pi^{- 1}(V)\) is also a C-nondegenerate Riemann surface. Then, every holomorphic mapping from D-E to \(R_ 2\) is extended to a holomorphic mapping from D to \(R_ 2\). The above theorem is extended by \textit{P. Järvi} [Kodai Math. J. 13, 84-87 (1990)]. In the final part of the paper, some examples of holomorphic mappings and Riemann surfaces are constructed.
