The aim of this paper is to extend both Haar's theorem on the characterization of finite dimensional Chebyshev subspaces G of C(X), X compact Hausdorff, and Mairhuber's theorem (if C(X) contains a Chebyshev subspace of dimension \(n\geq 2\) then X must be homeomorphic to a subset of the unit sphere \(S^ 1\) of \(R^ 2)\) to the larger class of finite dimensional subspaces whose metric projection has a continuous selection. The author considers the more general case of k-Chebyshev subspaces, i.e. such that dim P(f)\(\leq k\) for all \(f\in C(X)\), where P denotes the metric projection onto the power set of G [see \textit{G. S. Rubinstein}, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 102, 451-454 (1955; Zbl 0070.109) for an extension of Haar's theorem to k-Chebyshev subspaces]. In the extension of Mairhuber's theorem appear, as universal spaces (beside [0,1] and \(S^ 1)\), intervals with split points (order compactification of the interval [0,1]) which are presented in detail in an Appendix. These spaces are also important in domains of analysis other than approximation theory, e.g. as Gelfand spaces of Banach algebras of regulated real-valued functions on [0,1]. The case of almost Chebyshev subspaces (i.e. such that the set of all \(f\in C(x)\) for which card P(f)\(\geq 2\) is of first Baire category) and Z-subspaces (subspaces G such that int\(\{\) \(x\in X:\) \(g(x)=0\}=\emptyset\), for every nonzero \(g\in G)\) is also considered.
