The authors study weakly almost periodic functions f on locally compact groups G (i.e. \(f\in W(G))\) and in particular the subclass WS(G) of strictly a.p. functions (i.e. \(\{f^ h_ g\), g,h\(\in G\}\) is a weakly relatively compact set). At first they give a refined version of Namioka's proof of Ellis' theorem and some general results. It is shown that WS(G) contains \(C_ 0(G)\) (f continuous on G vanishing at infinity) if and only if \(G\in [SIN]\) (i.e. the left and right uniform structures on G coincide) or if \(C_ 0(G)\) contains small central functions (for a more general result concerning the last statement see \textit{R. Mosak} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 29, 613-616 (1971; Zbl 0204.353)]). It is shown that for certain groups W, \(W(G)=WS(G)\) (including the case of central groups or almost connected [SIN]-groups). Finally it is proved that separable groups G admit strongly well distributed sequences \((x_ n)\) with respect to WS(G). This gives an interesting generalization of a result of \textit{H. Rindler} [ibid. 57, 130-132 (1976; Zbl 0306.22009)] concerning almost periodic functions (as stated). The construction of the sequence \((x_ n)\) is completely the same (not mentioned), the ideas of that proof can be transferred to the general situation, using a clever argument in \(G\times G\) (Prop. 6.2) etc. For other results on well distributed sequences we refer to \textit{V. Losert} and \textit{H. Rindler} [Invent. Math. 50, 65-74 (1978; Zbl 0414.22006), Theorems 1-3, and Corollary].
