For a non-constant meromorphic function \(f\) the authors study a dynamical system of the form (1): \(dz(t)/dt=-f(z(t))/f'(z(t))\). Since this is not defined at critical points of \(f\), the system (1) is ``desingularized''; that is, the right hand side is replaced by a certain real analytic vector field \(N(f)\) defined on the whole of \(\mathbb C\), whose trajectories include those of (1). Local and global features of the phase portrait are obtained. In the case of rational \(f\), structural stability is also studied. For a generic class of rational functions the authors give a complete graph-theoretical characterization and classification of the system. They end with some remarks on the asymptotic behaviour of meromorphic functions. The work is closely related to the authors' earlier papers in Lect. Notes Math. 810, 181--239 (1980; Zbl 0478.58021) and in Int. Ser. Numer. Math. 55, 131--147 (1980; Zbl 0442.65031).
