The author considers some norm closed operator algebras generated by some operators acting on spaces of the type \(L_ p({\mathbb{R}}_+^{n+1},x^{\alpha}_ 0)\), \(1<p<\infty\), \(-1<\alpha <p- 1\). These algebras contain for instance Wiener-Hopf operators and certain singular integral operators. An injective algebra homomorphism gives a representation of the operator algebras above into the algebra of essentially bounded, operator-valued functions on the unit sphere. The main result asserts that for operators in the considered algebra, the quality of being Fredholm or semi-Fredholm is equivalent to invertibility and semi-invertibility respectively and also equivalent to the same conditions for the image through the representation mentioned above. Previous works of the same kind give Fredholm conditions in terms of the so called symbol function which is assumed to be continuous on the unit sphere. Piecewise continuity of the symbol is sufficient for the author's results.
