The multinomial sampling model of \textit{S. N. Ethier} and \textit{T. Nagylaki} [Adv. Appl. Probab. 12, 14-49 (1980; Zbl 0421.60062)] at a single multiallelic locus for a monoecious diploid finite population with discrete generations is considered. That model treats deterministically selection on zygotes (but not on fertility) and mutation, after which genetic drift is modelled by multinomial sampling (regulation) from an infinite population. Diffusion and other limits as \(N\to \infty\) for frequent and rare alleles are either reviewed or presented here for the first time (case of a branching process with immigration for rare alleles with allelic numbers having proper limiting distribution not concentrated at 0 when \(N\to \infty)\). Discussion and open problems follow. Limiting branching processes for the autosomal and X-linked dioecious multinomial- sampling models of Ethier and Nagylaki are also obtained (Appendix B).
