    Given two filtrations \(f=(I_ n)_ n\) and \(g=(J_ n)_ n\) on a commutative ring A, let \(\bar v_ f(g)=\lim_{n\to \infty}v_ j(J_ n)/n \) and \(\bar w_ f(g)=\lim_{n\to \infty}w_ f(J_ n)/n \) (if they exists in \({\bar {\mathbb{R}}}_+={\mathbb{R}}_+\cup \infty)\), where \(v_ f(J)=\sup \{r\in {\mathbb{N}}| J\subseteq I_ r\}\), \(w_ f(J)=\inf \{r\in {\mathbb{N}}| J\supseteq I_ r\}\) for an ideal \(J\subset A\). According to \textit{W. Bishop} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 277, 8-26 (1975; Zbl 0311.13008)] f is said to be approximable by powers (shortly an A.P filtration) if there exists a sequence of integers \((k_ n)_{n\in {\mathbb{N}}}\) such that \(I_{k_ nm}\subset I^ m_ n\) for all m, n and \(k_ n/n\to 1\) as \(n\to \infty\). If f and g are AP filtrations then the so-called generalized Samuel numbers \(\bar v_ f(g)\) and \(\bar w_ f(g)\) exist and satisfy some formulas extending those given by \textit{P. Samuel} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 56, 11-21 (1952; Zbl 0049.023)] and \textit{D. Rees} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 5, 107-128 (1955; Zbl 0066.288)].
