This paper studies the notion of approximate equivalence for representations of \(C^*\)-algebras (and \(C^*\)-dynamical systems). As defined by Arveson, two representations \(\pi\) and \(\sigma\) of \(C^*\)- algebra A, on Hilbert spaces \(H_{\pi}\) and \(H_{\sigma}\), respectively, are said to be approximately equivalent (written \(\pi \sim^ a\sigma)\) if there is a sequence of unitaries \(W_ n: H_{\pi}\to H_{\sigma}\) such that, for all \(x\in A\), \((i)\quad W_ n\pi (x)W^*_ n-\sigma (x)\in K(H),\) the compact operators on H, and \((ii)\quad \| W_ n\pi (x)W^*_ n-\sigma (x)\| \to 0.\) The author proves the following result which is analogous to the trace condition for unitary equivalence of representations of finite groups. Theorem. \(\pi \sim^ a\sigma\) iff \(trace(\pi (x))=trace(\sigma (x))\) for all \(x\in A^+.\) The author defines approximate equivalence for covariant representations of a \(C^*\)-dynamical system and shown that this notion is equivalent to the approximate equivalence of the integrated representation of the crossed product algebras.
