Billards are dynamical systems on tangent bundles mapping line elements along geodesics with unit speed and reflecting according to the law angle of incidence equals angle of reflection whenever a geodesic hits the boundary of the billard. Such systems are rather well understood and possess interesting hyperbolicity and ergodicity properties. In this paper an abstract class of two-dimensional billards is defined and an ergodicity theorem is proven. Concrete billards in domains with focusing components on the plane or the torus are given as examples. The paper concludes with a comparison of this work and its proof idea with the classical approach by Sinai. The detailed proofs make this paper interesting to read.
