Fitting sets can be aptly described as ``Fitting classes within a group'': they are defined to be sets of finite subgroups of a given group G that are closed under (i) conjugation in G, (ii) taking subnormal subgroups and (iii) forming normal products. In the present paper the theory of Lockett sections is transferred from Fitting classes to Fitting sets with notable success. For the considerable amount of technical detail the reader has to be referred to the paper itself. Interesting applications of the theory of Fitting sets are provided: 1. a simple counterexample to the non-soluble version of the Lockett conjecture that contrasts with the \textit{T. Berger} and \textit{J. Cossey} construction of a soluble counterexample [Math. Z. 154, 287-293 (1977; Zbl 0336.20012)]; 2. a non-soluble example showing that the lower Lockett star of an intersection of two given Fitting classes need not coincide with the intersection of their lower Lockett stars.
