The following problem is considered. Given a homomorphism \(\phi: X\to G\) between finite groups of Lie type in characteristic p, when can this be lifted to a morphism of suitable algebraic groups. In the special case where G is a special linear group with \(\phi\) an absolutely irreducible representation the answer is affirmative (see results of \textit{R. Steinberg} [Nagoya Math. J. 22, 33-56 (1963; Zbl 0271.20019)]). On the other hand there exist indecomposable representations for which there is no extension. The authors show that if \(\phi\) (X) is not contained in a proper parabolic subgroup of G and if certain restrictions are put on p when G is an exceptional group, then \(\phi\) can be extended. Results of this type are important in the study of subgroups of finite groups of Lie type. As an example, it is given an application to the study of maximal subgroups in finite exceptional groups.
