Three moving grid methods, I, published by \textit{L. R. Petzold} [Appl. Numer. Math. 3, 347-360 (1987; Zbl 0621.65123)], II, adapted from \textit{E. A. Dorfi} and \textit{L. O'C. Drury} [J. Comput. Phys. 69, 175-195 (1987; Zbl 0607.76041)], and III, moving finite elements of \textit{K. Miller} and \textit{R. N. Miller} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 18, 1019-1032 (1981; Zbl 0518.65082)] are tested on the heat equation with forcing term (a flame problem), the viscous Burgers equation and a pair of waves travelling in opposite directions. The conclusions point to the superiority of method II.
