We will describe two models of electrically active cells: the Hodgkin- Huxley model of the squid axon and a model of the cardiac Purkinje fiber due to \textit{D. Noble} [J. Physiol. 160, 317-352 (1962)]. We summarize some arguments for regarding these models as singularly perturbed equations, describe the singular perturbation theory that can be used, and indicate some further developments of the singular perturbation theory.
