The bending of a uniform Bernoulli beam clamped at one end and subject to control forces and moments at the other end is considered in a Hilbert space. Based on a set of his previous papers [e.g.: Lect. Notes Control Inf. Sci. 100, 18-37 (1988; Zbl 0648.93041)], for the case in which the damping is strictly proportional to the mode of frequency, the author presents an explicit calculation of the square root of the stiffness operator. The procedure is of great interest for optimization of active controllers of flexible structures.
