    A procedure is described which allows to estimate escape rates, stretching rates, and topological entropy near a hyperbolic fixed point for a class of two dimensional diffeomorphisms. This class is characterized by topological assumptions on the stable and unstable manifolds (which are believed to be `strictly nongeneric'). The assumptions, refining those introduced by Easton [\textit{R. W. Easton}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 294, 719-732 (1986; Zbl 0594.58032)], provide a classification of the maps under consideration. The method proceeds by employing symbolic dynamics, where the assumptions are such that transition matrices can be calculated explicitly (they only depend on the class of the map on hand). The results are applied to two dimensional integrable Hamiltonian flows perturbed by time periodic Hamiltonians, which are analyzed with respect to their Poincaré maps. In an appendix, a generalization of Easton's theorem is proved according to which maps from the same class are weakly equivalent also when considering the refined classification.
