Sequences of derivable translation planes (Q919605)

In this note translation planes of order \(q^ 4\) over \(GF(q^ 2)\) are studied. The author extends a construction method given by \textit{Y. Hiramine, M. Matsumoto} and \textit{T. Oyama} [same journal 24, 123-137 (1987; Zbl 0646.51006)] so that one obtains these planes from translation planes of order \(q^ 2\) over GF(q). Iterating this method one gets a sequence of translation planes. The planes can be characterized by matrix spreads. Calculating this matrix representation the author gets the semifield planes of \textit{V. Boerner-Lantz} [J. Geom. 27, 112-118 (1986; Zbl 0604.12020)] from the Desarguesian planes. Also other known translation planes may be derived by the construction method. The full collineation group of the plane of order \(q^ 4\) is shown to be solvable.
