Let \((M^ n,g)\) be a Riemannian manifold of finite volume, u a sufficiently smooth real-valued function, D the gradient, \(H^ n\) the n- dimensional Hausdorff measure, q and p are positive numbers, possibly \(\infty\), \(mv(u)=1/H^ n(M^ n)\cdot \int u(x)dH^ n(x)\) the mean value of u. The author proves a sharp inequality of Poincaré type \[ (\int | u(x)-mv(u)|^ q dH^ n(x))^{1/q}\quad \leq \quad C(\int | Du(x)|^ p dH^ n(x))^{1/p} \] in the following cases: (i) \(M^ n\) is an open ball in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and \(p=1\), \(0<q\leq n/(n-1)\); (ii) \(M^ n\) is a sphere in \({\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}\) and either \(p=1\), \(0<q\leq n/(n-1)\) or \(p>n\), \(q=\infty\). These results are a consequence of the fact that the relative isoperimetric inequality for balls and spheres takes an explicit form.
