Given a field L its Brauer group is denoted by Br(L). The field is called linked if the classes of all quaternion algebras form a subgroup of Br(L). Various examples of linked fields can be found in the literature [cf. \textit{R. Elman} and \textit{T. Y. Lam}, Invent. Math. 21, 125-137 (1973; Zbl 0267.10029)]. Let F be a formally real Pythagorean field whose associated space \(X_ F\) of orderings has finite chain length. The author shows that linkedness of F(\(\sqrt{-1})\) can then be characterized in terms of the structure of \(X_ F\).
