In order to solve the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind \[ x(t)-\int^{1}_{0}| t-s|^{\alpha}a(t,s)x(s)ds=f(t),\quad 0<\alpha <1,\quad 0\leq t\leq 1, \] numerically, the authors use spline approximation by splines with variable knots and collocation. As a consequence of a theorem by \textit{C. de Boor} [Proc. Sympos. Univ. Alberta, Edmonton 1972, ISNM 21, 57-72 (1973; Zbl 0255.41007)] convergence of the method can be proved. Order results are given and corroborated by a numerical example.
