The author studies a lifting operator \(\sigma\) for certain generalized characters of a subgroup H of a finite group G. Generally \(\sigma\) is defined as follows: Let H be a subgroup of G, \(\pi\) a set of primes and A a union of \(\pi\)-sections of H. Let \(\theta\) be a complex valued function on H vanishing outside A and constant on the intersections of the \(\pi\)- sections of G with A. Then \(\theta^{\sigma}\) with domain G is defined as the extension of \(\theta\) which is constant on each \(\pi\)-section of G and vanishing on \(\pi\)-sections not meeting A. Generally \(\theta^{\sigma}\) is a rational combination of irreducible characters of G and conditions are studied for it to be a generalized character. These results are applied in the final section to obtain results about relative normal complements.
