Gradient bounds for the solutions of quasilinear elliptic Dirichlet problems are derived by means of a maximum principle. Numerical results for the maximum stress in the Saint-Venant torsion problem are then discussed. The author improves the known bounds of Payne, Sperb and Schaefer for certain domains in the plane.
