The classical theory of plasticity is founded on fundamental postulates concerning the rate of dissipation of mechanical energy during plastic deformation. In this paper the authors discuss the relationship between the postulates of Drucker, Martin, and Il'yushin and show, among other things, that they are equivalent. The paper is written in a detailed mathematical style and should be of interest to specialists in the theory.
