This paper deals with two special bifurcation results for the Dirichlet problem of the boundary value problem \(-\Delta u=u^ r+\sigma u^ q\), \(u>0\) on the domain \(\Omega \subseteq {\mathbb{R}}^ N\), \(\Omega\) smooth and bounded, \(r=(N+1)(N-2)^{-1}\). The first result (giving a partial answer to a conjecture by \textit{H. Brézis} and \textit{L. Nirenberg} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 36, 437-477 (1983; Zbl 0541.35029)] reads: If \(\Omega \subseteq {\mathbb{R}}^ 3\) is of Ljusternik-Schnirelman category p,q\(\in (2,3)\), \(\sigma >0\) large enough, then there are at least \(p+1\) solutions of the above mentioned Dirichlet problem with \(N=3\). The second result concerns the case \(\Omega \subseteq {\mathbb{R}}^ N\), \(N\geq 4\), \(\sigma\) small enough, and gives a branch of solutions under a small deformation of \(\Omega\). There are basic connections with the regular part of the Green's function of \(\Delta\). The words ``from infinity'' in the title give hints, that bifurcation branches asymptotically end off (or begin) in solutions, which concentrate at distinguished points of \(\Omega\).
