Let \(F\) be a field of characteristic \(\ne 2\), and let \(E\) be a finite, separable field extension of \(F\). If \(q(x)\) is a quadratic form over \(E\) and \(\operatorname{Tr}\) is the trace function from \(E\) to \(F\), then \(\operatorname{Tr}(q(x))\) is a quadratic form over \(F\). The Scharlau transfer \(T\colon W(E)\to W(F)\) for Witt-Grothendieck rings of \(E\) and \(F\), respectively, is the map induced by the preceding correspondence. \(W(F)\) may be described in terms of generators and relations, and the generators are determined by 1-cocycles of the Galois group \(G_F\) for the separable, algebraic closure of \(F\) over \(F\) with coefficients in the additive group of integers modulo 2. Thus \(W(F)\) is determined by the group \(G_F\). By clever arguments using cohomology of groups with coefficients in the integers modulo powers of 2, the author shows that the Scharlau transfer only depends on \(G_F\) and its subgroup \(G_E\). The paper contains very few references, and there appear to be several misprints.
