Let (M,V) be a CR-manifold, \(\dim_ RM=2n+s\), \(\dim_ CV=n\), where V is the subbundle of the complexified tangent space CTM of M that defines the CR structure. A submanifold N of a CR manifold (M,V) is a CR submanifold if \(V|_ N\subset CTN\). The authors study the extendibility of CR functions or distributions defined in a neighborhood of a point \(m_ 0\in M\) in terms of the definition: (M,V) is minimal at \(m_ 0\in M\) if there is no CR submanifold \(N\ni m_ 0\) such that \(\dim_ RN<\dim_ RM\). [Cf. \textit{A. E. Tumanov}, Math. USSR, Sb. 64, No.1, 129-140 (1989); translation from Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 136(178), No.1(5), 128-139 (1988; Zbl 0692.58005).] Thus if (M,V) is a locally embeddable CR manifold and N is any CR submanifold that guarantees that M is not minimal at \(m_ 0\), then there exists a CR distribution T in a neighborhood U of \(m_ 0\) such that support \(T=N\cap U\). The main result is that minimality at a point \(m_ 0\) of a generic CR manifold \(M\subset C^{n+s}\) is necessary for holomorphic extendibility to a wedge having a neighborhood of \(m_ 0\) as edge. The sufficiency was proved by Tumanov, loc. cit. The authors also prove the uniqueness of a CR submanifold at \(m_ 0\) of least dimension and give two interesting characterisations of such a submanifold.
