This article considers oscillatory and asymptotic behaviour of solutions for a neutral first order equation (of advanced, retarded or mixed type). A feature of the employed methods concerns the fact that the problem is tackled involving some conditions on the coefficients and the argument only rather than the characteristic equation associated with that one under consideration. Finally, some of the results obtained for the constant coefficients case are generalised to the variable coefficients case. The importance of this problem consists in the field of applications: such equations model some phenomena which appear in networks containing lossless transmission lines, but also in the instabilities specific for some concrete continuous media.
