In this paper \(X\) denotes a compact convex subset of a locally convex space. Let \(cc(X)\) be the hyperspace of all nonempty compact and convex subsets of \(X\). The space \(cc(X)\) is considered with the Vietoris topology. \textit{S. B. Nadler}, \textit{J. Quinn} and \textit{N. M. Stavrakas} [Pac. J. Math. 83, 441--462 (1979; Zbl 0468.52004)], proved that, if \(Q\) denotes the Hilbert cube \([0,1]^{\omega}\), then \(cc(Q)\) is homeomorphic to \(Q\). In the paper under review, the authors are interested in nonmetrizable spaces \(X\). Their main theorem says that \(cc(X)\) is an absolute retract if and only if \(X\) is an absolute retract of weight \(\leqslant \omega _{1}\). This result is used to show that \(cc(X)\) is homeomorphic to the Tychonov cube \([0,1]^{\omega _{1}}\) (resp., the cone over \([0,1]^{\omega _{1}}\)) if and only if \(X\) is homeomorphic to \([0,1]^{\omega _{1}}\) (resp., the cone over \([0,1]^{\omega _{1}}\)). The proofs are based on the spectral analysis of nonmetrizable compact Hausdorff spaces, in particular on the Shchepin Spectral Theorem [\textit{E. V. Shchepin}, Usp. Mat. Nauk 36, No. 3(219), 3--62 (1981; Zbl 0463.54009)] as well as on analysis of the selection type properties of the maps of the hyperspaces of compact convex subsets.
