In the paper results concerning the existence of selections to lower semicontinuous set-valued maps are studied. The author introduces some general methods allowing to extend classical (of the Michael type) results concerning selections to the case of lower semicontinuous set-valued maps acting between not necessarily paracompact spaces. For instance, he discusses the so-called principle of a paracompact extension of a map, the principle of factorization and the principle of equivalence between set-valued maps and shows how these principles may be applied in order to obtain new selection results for maps defined on spaces from various classes of topological and metrizable spaces. An application to maps between topological groups is presented.
