The authors discuss the impact of additive random fluctuations on spatially extended systems, modelled by integro-differential equations. Two types of fluctuations are considered, namely fluctuations uncorrelated in space and time, and fluctuations which are uncorrelated in time only, and constant in space. The arguments invoke stochastic center manifolds for stochastic differential equations and adiabatic elimination for Fokker-Planck equations. A change of the stability behaviour in the case of spatially constant fluctuations is found. This is confirmed by numerical simulations.
